A gin-basil quencher to serve at summer's peak
If you’re familiar with “engagement chicken”—the roast chicken recipe that continues to take certain corners of the internet by storm (it’s so good, allegedly, that it guarantees a marriage proposal)—you’ll recognize the flavor profile here, because this is its cocktail counterpart. A quencher to serve up or over rocks for summer’s final few weeks, it’s super easy to make, and also incredibly tasty and impressive. *Someone* will end up on his or her knee(s).
Makes 1 cocktail
3 to 4 basil leaves, plus additional for garnish
3/4 ounce simple syrup
2 ounces gin
3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
In a cocktail shaker, muddle the basil with the simple syrup. Add gin and lemon juice, then fill with ice and shake vigorously. Strain through sieve into a coupe or other cocktail glass to serve up, or pour over ice in a Collins glass, and top with club soda. Garnish with a basil leaf.
